I have always thought that the Chase, was an unfair system, and this year will most likely be the best example yet. Jeff Gordon is leading the points race, by a staggering margin of 317 points from Tony Stewart, yet after Richmond his points lead will be eroded and Jimmie Johnson will be the top of the Championship, and Kurt Busch who is currently 11th will jump into 4th . Suddenly all that the 24 team has worked for will be gone.
Then there are the teams on the outside looking in, in the first year it was Jamie Mcmurray who finished 11th, but in reality he would have been further up in the top 10. Then last year Tony Stewart would have finished 4th in the Championship, and yet his recorded finishing position was 11th. This year whom ever is 13th on Saturday night, will be excluded from making it into the top 10.
I currently believe, that the chase is a joke, a gimmick, made by Brian France, to increase excitement in the sport, but if your driver is not making the chase, it then becomes, a question, to why they are bothering to race, what can be gained by Ryan Newman and Greg Biffle. It is not even like they can use the information learnt at the next ten races, for next year, since it will be COT all next season. On top of that the amount of time spent on those who fail to make the chase is limited, both on Television and in the written Media. I would hate to be a fan of someone like David Stremme, because, there will be so little mentioned about him. No wonder why his sponsor is leaving.
I would like to see a change in the points system, close it right up, three points, between each driver, and forget bonus points for winning, these bonus points, just create an artificial picture of the racing season. After all some drivers will lead a lap, in an uncompetitive car, just to get bonus point, under caution.
I am sure Nascar will be come exciting again one day, but for the mean time, I guess, as a fan of a driver who has no possibility of being Champion this season, as he is currently lying in 15th, I will pay half attention to the rest of the season
