Bravo, Jeff
There's probably a lot of you out there that are thinking, "Why in the world didn't Jeff Gordon just put Jimmie Johnson into the wall?" in order to win the Goody's Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway. I'm sure Johnson himself was thinking that. It's not as if Gordon didn't try to move him out of the way. Gordon said that himself, and, with the Car of Tomorrow and it's nuances, it was a difficult task. Kudos go out to Gordon, however, for not outright wrecking him. He did just about everything else he could do to get past him. But, as Gordon knows, it would have made for a tense situation between the two friends and teammates, and it probably could have come back to haunt him later. He didn't take the cowardly way out like Brian Vickers did at Talladega last October. Good job, Jeff. That's a great way to earn even more respect than you have now.

Comments:
DoubleB is spot on.  We have all seen the #24 push others out of the way in the past.  Not that he is the only one to have done so.

I firmly believe he was protecting his own insterests by not wrecking the 48, anyone else would have gone down the front strech backwards.

Bravo, Jeff?  Not from me.  It was a good business decision not to wreck your team mate and the car that you own.  I believe DoubleB is correct in pointing out that if it would have been a non-Hendrick car, he would been less careful of getting to the front.  Did anyone else see his reaction after climbing out of his car?  His face indicated complete disgust; I thought he was going to cry.  You could tell he truly believed that JJ was supposed to let him take the checkers.

Gordon should have won the race, one way or another and his dissappointment after the race was more at himself than anything. He could have moved JJ a little harder and maybe have taken him out, this would have been par for the course w/ Jeff. Flip th script and they're are 42 other drivers on the track that would have sent Jeff spinning, minus a few quality vets that simply don't race that way. JJ raced Jeff extremely hard for couple dozen laps and did not give him an once of room and it's human nature to become frustrated at the situation, hence the post comments. It's easy to hate a winner dynomann and "diaper boy" wow, did you think of that on your own or did your mom help ya. Bet your a 1 year Jr. fan aren't ya! and by the way JPM is the most over rated rookie/driver to come along in a long time, any driver can over drive a car and be fast, but longevity is the key and he sure hasen't had alot since his win, but this is King Brian's ticket to the Hispanic community so look forward to seeing a average driver be treated like a superstar.
Enjoy Nashville all!

I find it interesting that everyone was all over Juan Pablo Montoya for moving his teammate out of the way to the win in Mexico, but 62% of the people in the NASCAR.com poll think Gordon should have done the same thing to Johnson!  I guess it's OK, if you're a superstar, but not if you're a rookie, right?

On the flip side, if it was any of the other 41 drivers who started the race,... Gordon would have most certainly sent them up the track, no doubt about it.  And then later in victory lane when asked about it he would have said his apologetic cliche, "Man, I hated to do that to <insert name>, but it was just one of those racing things and I think he understands I was going for the win!" Or something like that,... we've heard it several times over the years.

Yes, he deserves a litte acknowledgement for what he didn't do this time around, but don't give him too much credit.  9 times out of 10 the outcome would have been different!

Great April Fools Day 'post' Shawn. Hahaha.

Jeffy finally took a page from the Mark Martin 'race 'em don't wreck 'em' book of racing but it was obvious he didn't want to. His '1 step forward' was overshadowed by his '2 steps backwards' comments after the race.

Gotta hand it to you tho' Shawn > you made the Top Ten for April Fools Day jokes on the web. Maybe next year you can make the top 5 with a 'Bravo Smoke' similar post.

;^)
