Erase the "E"
Last week on the media tour Gillett-Evernham Motorsports announced the new team name – Richard Petty Motorsports.

Now that Ray Evernham is gone, I think it’s time that the drop the “E” symbol from the top right corner of the No. 9 and 19.

Both cars of Elliott Sadler and Kasey Kahne were on display on the media tour and still had the “E” on the numbers.

With his long standing tradition of not associating his cars with a beer sponsor, Petty views the No. 43 and No. 44 as his cars and the No. 9 and 19 as Gillett’s. Kahne has the Budweiser sponsorship and Sadler carries the Coors Light Pole Award sticker.

Even though the cars are viewed as split, it’s time to change all the car numbers to the Petty font.

After all, the four cars are under the Petty Motorsports name.

Ray is just waiting to be bought out, so I agree maybe a change on the number design is appropiate. Why have the "E" if Evernham doesn't want to be part of the team anymore?

Leave the King alone. It's his concious he has to deal with. I'm just glad he's still here and with Dodge

Not so seriously...lol But isn't this a little petty.

I think if you choose to display photos to illustrate a point, the photos should be of sufficient size for the reader to see the detail you are referring to.

But in typical R1 fashion the photos are microscopic.
Even most of the photos in the galleries are pathetic in size.

You see it as Richard Petty Motorsports. You are wrong. The team is still GEM. And Evernham DOES still own part of the team. He just isn't involved. When Petty didn't own his team did they drop the Petty font? No. Why should Evernham and Gillett be forced to lose what made their team stand out? The E should stay. On their uniforms as well. Sure, the teams NAME is RPM. You can have the RPM logo on their logos on the breast like every other team does. But the E should stay. Tradition is tradition. Since 2001 the 9 and 19 have carried that E, and it deserves to stay on the car. The name might be Petty, but the teams are still Gillett-Evernham.

The font used by the 9 and 19 are not the issue, the real issue is King Richard's view of his cars versus their cars. The entire team is called Richard Petty Motorsports and all the cars are entered in Sprint Cup races under this banner. Furthermore, Petty Enterprises would have withered away had they not merged with Gillet-Evernham Motorsports. The continuation of the Petty name in NASCAR is being helped in part by the Budweiser sponsorship on the #9. This my cars versus their cars attitude will be the undoing of this venture. If the #9 develops a chassis setup or some other tweak that will benefit all the Richard Petty Motorsports cars will the #43 and #44 not use it because it was developed on "one of Gillet's" cars? Likewise, if the #43 or #44 discovers some tweak or trick during the season with they not share it with "the other guy's cars?"

No disrespect to Richard Petty here. His contributions to the sport and his acheivements stand alone. Furthermore, he is entitled to his views regarding alcohol. However, the my cars versus his cars way of thinking does not have a place in the modern version of NASCAR Cup racing.
