Let's Play Two!
Sunday afternoon doubleheaders were a summer Major League Baseball tradition back in the days when Ernie Banks was performing his magic for the Chicago Cubs. Unfortunately, the “two for one” package has gone by the wayside. Now, it seems the only doubleheaders are additions to the schedule necessitated by bad weather. This weekend, Homestead-Miami Speedway is reviving the tradition of the weekend doubleheader with SpeedJam – two major full-length races on one day, for one reasonable price. Saturday afternoon, the Rolex Series competes at 3 p.m. in the GAINSCO Grand Prix of Miami on the 2.3-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway road circuit. Then, at 8 p.m., the IndyCar Series opens its 2008 campaign with the GAINSCO Auto Insurance Indy 300, America’s first open-wheel race since the historic unification was announced last month. It’s a great day for race fans. I hope Grand-Am fans will wait around to watch the Indy Cars, because there’s nothing quite as spectacular as watching the 200-mph rockets race nose-to-tail and side-by-side on the 1.5-mile variably banked oval. I also hope the Indy Car fans arrive early. Last year’s Grand Prix of Miami was one of the best races of the year. Bill Auberlen and Mathew Alhadeff gave Sigalsports its first Rolex Series victory in an event that saw 13 cars finish on the lead lap, with cars running nose to tail throughout the final hour. Indy Car fans will get to see Graham Rahal, Justin Wilson, Will Power, Oriol Servia and others in action for the first time on an oval. For Rolex Series fans, it will be the first race for the new Dallara and Lola chassis. And, that’s not all. The day also includes autograph sessions for both series, music, the international food court and entertainment for the entire family. Tickets start at $30. Sports car fans have the option of watching all of the action from the grandstand, or to roar through portions of the infield, where several small bleachers are strategically located. For the best seat in the house, be sure to check out the new Turn 1 grandstand. You not only get a great view of the action in the first few turns in the infield around the small lake, but can also see the entire circuit. It’s a great seat for the Indy Cars, also.
