Lamar Still Looking for '07
Burney Lamar opened the 2006 campaign with a second-place finish at Daytona in Kevin Harvick’s No. 77 Dollar General Chevrolet. He ended the season sitting on the sidelines at Homestead-Miami Speedway, looking for an opportunity to race in 2007. Not that Lamar was sitting back, watching the action. He was hard at work at Homestead — and at the other events where he was not racing — talking to as many people as possible, looking for another chance. “I’m working on the best opportunity right now,” said the 25-year old native of West Sacramento, Calif. “It’s hard to say where I’ll end up, but my agent and I are working hard on finding something good.” Lamar competed in 29 Busch Series races, finishing seventh at Atlanta and ninth at Nashville. “We had a lot of good runs in the No. 77 car, and had a lot of fun with Kevin, Delana and all the team, and my crew chief, Gene Nead. I got a lot of great experience,” said the graduate of the NASCAR Southwest Series. “I’m looking forward to applying that in something for next year. Actually, I want a full-time Truck ride, a part-time Busch deal and a Cup race or two. That’s what I’m hoping for.” Harvick can’t be faulted for benching the rising star. His sponsor, Dollar General, was looking for an established star — someone like former NEXTEL Cup Series champion Bobby Labonte, who will drive the No. 77 when his schedule allows in 2007. It’s great to see so many NEXTEL Cup Series drivers competing occasionally in the Busch Series. What we need are more promising, up-and-coming drivers like Lamar given the opportunity to showcase their talents. Unfortunately, it seems that most of the young drivers set to run the full 2007 Busch Series will also be running in the NEXTEL Cup. The others will be sharing the seat whenever the team’s NEXTEL Cup drivers are unavailable, or — like Lamar — watching from the sidelines.
