No Tolerance

I have to applaud NASCAR for the way the sanctioning body handles any illegal substance abuse.

Unlike other sports that give repeat offenders chance after chance, NASCAR's zero tolerance should be the becnhmark for all professional sports.

Drugs, alcohol abuse or any other illegal substance have no place in a sport of high speed and danger.

Shane Hmiel and Kevin Grubb are two examples of how swiftly NASCAR has dwalt with this issue in the past.

Unfortunately Aaron Fike is the latest.

Fike was suspensed indefinitely when he and his girlfriend were found with heroin last weekend outside an amusement park in Cincinnati.

Had Fike been an NFL or Major League Baseball player, who no doubt would have been able to appeal and prolong the process.

NASCAR has no such issues.

Taking the action they did in this matter and similar ones before it is the right thing to do.

Other sports should sit up and take notice.

Good moves made by NASCAR to get drivers who use drugs off the track.  Dopers and hippies do not belong in racing.

I do agree with you on this one. If you wanna get Soned or whatever, then you definitely DO NOT belong out there  driving t high speed a endangering others. NASCAR has the RIGHT Policy on this.....

does drinking and driving matter?? top stars that i like have gotten dui tickets on xm talk shows some of the competitors talk about getting drunk and being hung over almost every week. stoned, drunk, hung over, which is distractive driving, are all illegal  but the big guys get probation. can you say jr./bush leauge move or  will we see a true tasting policy ie.. urine test for top 5 in all races random breathalizer and urine tests at all tests, practices, and races. try the fmcsa/dot or the avaition test policy. and post results and then it will impress me but till then it can stay in the shadows of the sport and 1 or2 small fish can be used as token sacrifises to the no tolerance gods.

I'm with dog catcher.
I applaud the actions that have been taken, but it seems NASCAR takes action on drugs only when forced too. Without a black and white testing policy, these swift actions are nothing more than window dressing.
I would also test anyone involved in an on track incident.
Pro bicycle racing has many drug problems, but it is by far the active sport in the fight against substance abuse. Not only are the top finishers tested, but there are also random test given to others before and after the race. There are also out of competition tests.

"Knock knock."
"Who's there?"
"Pee in a cup."
"Pee in a cup who"?
"Pee in a cup or this gets marked as a positive test and you'll have to pay a fine equal to one years salary. thank you for your contribution and enjoy the rest of your day Mr. Armstrong."

While other sports are fighting performance enhancing drugs, the abuse of drugs or alcohol in auto racing can have immediate consequences to 43 drivers and their teams. I would not want to be over the wall wondering if the driver pitting behind us is hung-over, drunk or high.

I agree. This type of public illegality is more than a matter of "personal freedom" or one's wish to use "recreational" drugs. Athletes, whether they like it or not, are in point of fact "role models," not only for young people but for the community/country at large. When NFL and NBA players are allowed openly to violate the law then it becomes a matter of public interest to us all. It should matter to everyone that a highly paid athlete gets by with something that a poor guy would get jail time for doing.

Hooray for NASCAR. Set the bar high and keep it there!
