Friday night saw 75 or so late models, 240+ cars total in 4 classes.  24 heats on Friday night.  Fantastic racing, but if you've been to Columbus Speedway before, you already new that.

Columbus, MS - Saturday night Columbus Speedway hosted the final night of Mississippi's biggest racing event, the Magnolia State 100 featuring $25,007-to-win Super Late Models and Magnolia State Championships for local divisions. 79 Super Late Models and upwards of 240 total race cars made the trek to "The Baddest Bullring in the South" to take part in the weekend's activities presented by Singleton Motorsports.

Super Late Model polesitter Michael England would draw for what would be a 4-car inversion for the main event, placing Chris Wall and Earl Pearson, Jr. on the front row. The early stages of the event saw Pearson and Wall battle furiously around a pair of cautions, swapping the lead on lap 2, lap 3, and lap 6 before Pearson settled in for a while as Neil Baggett and Shane Clanton battled side-by-side for third for several laps. The leaders moved into lapped traffic for the first time on lap 13, just before the third caution was drawn by Garrett Durrett with Pearson, Wall, Clanton, Baggett, and England in the top five.

Clanton took the heat off of Pearson on the restart by racing hard with Wall, taking over second place on lap 14 only to have Wall drive back by on the rim three laps later. Caution would fall once again on lap 21, leading to a heated race for the lead between Pearson and Wall before a fifth caution on lap 27 - the last yellow of the race for some time - settled the field with Pearson over Wall while Jack Sullivan vaulted into third place ahead of Baggett and Clanton.

Baggett, Sullivan, and Wall would go three-wide for second place behind Pearson up until Wall secured the spot again on about lap 30, with Baggett easing back into third. Baggett then went after Wall as England, Clanton, and Sullivan engaged in a tough three-way race in the rearview.

After shaking off Baggett, Wall would slowly reel in Pearson, catching the leader by lap 39 and making a successful pass for the lead on lap 41 just before the pair began to move into lapped traffic once again. Pearson would make a daredevil pass using the infield berm on lap 43 to retake the lead as Baggett moved back in on Wall, then claimed second place for his own on lap 45. Wall quickly rebounded, moving outside to regain second place on the next lap as England, who had gained 4th place, began to work on Baggett. Wendell Wallace joined the fight on lap 51 as Pearson led the way through traffic ahead of Wall.

Wall could be seen slowly reeling in Pearson each lap, getting within striking distance just before a lap 67 caution fell for David Breazeale with Pearson leading Wall, Baggett, England, and Clanton. Clanton would use the break in action to his advantage, as the restart brought the field back to him and it became apparent that he had begun to strengthen as the race wore on. Clanton jumped to second place on the start, fell back to third on the next lap, then moved back around Wall and made what would have been a pass on Pearson for the lead if not for the final caution of the event on lap 71.

Pearson would lead Clanton, Baggett, Wall, and England as the final green flag portion of the race began. Baggett would reclaim second place at the restart, but Clanton moved back into the spot on lap 74 using the rim. Pearson, who had run the hub for almost the entire race, moved to the top in an attempt to avoid another high-side pass for the lead, but Clanton adapted by dropping to the middle of the track. A pass attempt on lap 78 would fail and Clanton would be forced to dispatch Wall - now in thrid - before making another almsot-good-enough attempt on lap 80.

On lap 83, Clanton drove in under Pearson, performing a daring slidejob in turn two with Pearson driving right back under the new leader going into the backstretch. Clanton had been strong on the topside all night, and rocketed down the straight ahead of Pearson, taking the lead and stretching out in the final laps of the race.

Clanton, who has had several successful runs at The Bullring in the past, would go on to claim the $25,007 top prize as the winner of the 18th Magnolia State 100. Following across the line would be Pearson, Wall, England, and late-charger Clint Smith. Don O'Neal would lead Jon Gill, Baggett, Wallace, and Sullivan to complete the top ten.

In local division Magnolia State Championship action, TJ Herndon would take the Open Wheel Modified win in a fight for survival that saw its share of hard hits and tough spills as well as all-out racing. Herndon would cross the line ahead of Randy Todd, Johnathan Russell, Jimmy Brasfield, and Shay Knight. Josh Putnam would make a late charge in a smoothly-run, spectacular Late Mdoel Stock/Crate Late Model feature to take the checkers ahead of Logan Yates, Jeremy Glasgow, Jamie Tollison, and Justin Carter. Jeremy Robertson would take the Street Stock win over Kevin Monahan, Billy Tedford, Heath Beard, and Marvin Beard.

Awesome run for John Gill! Gotta love the Modern Day Cowboy Smile [:)] Nice to see that Eller has decided to keep him in the car for a while. Wonder if they'll be at the WoO World Finals together at the end of this month...
