The other day Sweetie and I were in Lubbock attending New Student Orientation with Young Son.
One of the "sessions" parents are asked to attend is put on by the Athletic Department......on the Suite level at Jones SBC (At&T?) Stadium.
They had a complimentary bar, snacks and a speaker who identified himself as "Assistant Athletic Director in charge of Something." Fund-raising is what came to mind as we listened to him speak. He told us about the various "contributions" we could make to the Athletic Department, what that "contribution" would entitle us to, about Tech's overall athletic budget and how competitive the Big XII is.
Then he took questions from the parents. One parent wanted to know if Tech was gonna' be able to beat Texas this year. He said....."We hope Texas ain't as good this year as they were last year." (I'm thinkin' that's a "prob'ly not.....but we may have a chance, 'cause we got 'em in Lubbock this year.")
Bobby Knight came up. Short version is.........
They love him in Lubbock. The AD guy shared this with us.
.....When Bobby Knight agred to come and coach at Tech......he was still under contract to Indiana. His agreement with IU stated....if he took another job coaching, IU would only pay the difference between his new contract and the contract he had with IU.
So, Knight agreed to coach at Tech, the question of salary came up and the AD guys said.....
"Bobby told us to just pay him $10-15,000. Indiana could pay the difference 'til his contract expired."
