I'm split when it comes to Mark. At first I thought he's just making a fool out of himself with his retirement flip flops. For Pete's sake just make up your mind and stick with it. Then I start thinking, man would I like to be in his position. Not having to work but still being good enough to get a good ride when you want it. I can't decide for sure but I'm leaning toward the making a fool out of himself.
To answer your question, no Hendrick equipment won't make a difference. He will probably win a race or two in the next couple of years but the championship years are behind him. Guys like Johnson, Edwards, Bush and Biffle are just too balls to the wall for most of the others to really challenge for a cup.

I just don't get where your animosity toward Martin come from. Did he personally do something to you?
Yes, the year he and Rusty were to retire, it was to be a retirement, but as a favor to Roush he agreed to one more full-time year. Since then it has been year-by-year. It was during this year he wanted to go part time and both of these decisions were based on helping his son develop his career. His son has since decided to do other things, so why doesn't Martin have the right to continue racing. The main reason he wanted to retire is gone, so why not continue with what he loves?
You can't possibly believe he doesn't deserve to be behind the wheel due to ability - can you?
Look at his performace over the last two years.
He was leading the points with Ginn when took his first break.
The 8 car finished 14th in owner's points.
Martin was 28th despite only running 2/3's of the schedule.
He may not win the championship, but I predict that he will make the chase and not be the lowest placed HMS car at the end of the season.

Billy makes some good points, IMHO. No sweat off my back if he changed his mind.
Mark has shown he can still do it pretty darned well, so why not?
I'd venture to say that 99.9% of us wish we had the opportunity to do what Mark's doing. Personally I wouldn't do it, given the fact that you pretty much give up your home life and any semblance of privacy because of the internet and message boards.

The $$ would be great, but everything else you have to put up with isn't worth it for me.

Who wants to bet he does better with that car than Mears, or even the Shrub did?

While he may outperform Mears in the 5, the car has been a penalty box for a long, long time....and didn't HMS "swap" the 5 and 25 cars a few years back? The 25 was a penalty box after Tim Richmond died.....

What about the rumors of Mark Martin moving to the Roger Penske team in 2010. "It's been a dream of mine all my life, to drive for a car owner who has done as much in various forms of racing as Roger has", said Martin. That could be his quote in about 10 months. Martin's a great driver, but this retirement thing......

What a waste of a good seat! That old hack should just call it quits (for good this time) and watch the races on his big screen TV.

Mark Martin may be old, but he's no hack by any means.

Makes the Rousch and Gibbs Stables look rather weak doesn't it? I know they've done well, but HMS now has probably the four most marketable drivers Nascar has ever had aside from Dale Earnhardt Sr. I really hope they could put the talent behind Martin to get him into the championship. I think he is the only older driver that can seriously make a run at it. It would be great to finally see him do it.
Funniest thing is that Nascar's most popular driver is the weakest link (record wise) in the group.

BTK........pretty much questions to be answered here, thats all. Do you know of anyone else who "has retired" as many times as Mark? I actually hope he does well with MNS. Only time will tell eh?

I was going to respond to PM, but then I recognized it for what it was - just bait from a Master Baiter!
