STATHAM GEORGIA (10-26-06) – Cunningham Motorsports is proud to announce the addition of ARCA RE/MAX Series veteran driver/owner Mark Gibson to its team effective immediately.

Gibson, who has 312 career RE/MAX Series starts throughout ARCA tenure that reaches back to 1982, will serve as General Manager for what will be a two-car operation located in Statham, Georgia.

Through a joint venture with Mark Gibson Racing and Cunningham Motorsports, Gibson will help steer the two-car team to include the Kerry Scherer-owned #4 Dodge Motorsports Charger entries and the Gibson-owned #59 cars, the number synonymous with Gibson for so many years.

"Kerry (Scherer) and I go way back,” said Gibson. “We’ve remained friends and we’ve always talked a lot. This is a great opportunity for us to work together again; it also gets his equipment closer to home for him being based here in Georgia, so it’s a win-win situation for both.”

Gibson, who partnered with Scherer in the late 90s under the CSG (Cunningham-Scherer-Gibson) Racing banner, procured his career-best RE/MAX Series driver points finish of second to Frank Kimmel in 1998.

scherercandid06.jpgCar owner Scherer (left), under the Cunningham Motorsports umbrella in 2006, helped direct the official factory authorized Dodge Driver Development program with resounding success. Drivers’ Chase Miller, Scott Lagasse Jr., Juan Pablo Montoya, Kevin Swindell and Josh Wise all spent time behind the wheel of the #4 Dodge Motorsports Dodge. Miller, of Canton, Georgia, earned the highest marks with a thrilling victory at Pocono Raceway in July when he, in a back-up machine, steered the #4 car from last to first. By doing so, Miller, at 19, became the youngest winner in Pocono history. Lagasse also finished a career-best third at Chicagoland Speedway in early September. Montoya also finished third in the 4 car at Talladega Superspeedway in early October.

“The careers of these young drivers are what is paramount at Cunningham Motorsports,” explained Scherer. “Giving them a safe, competitive and professional platform to develop and demonstrate their abilities is one of the most important objectives of our team. The success of Cunningham Motorsports is measured by more than the win record; it’s measured by the future success of these drivers that come through our program.”

Miller also captured his career-first top-10 finish in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series recently at Martinsville Speedway in the Bobby Hamilton Racing #4 Dodge Motorsports Dodge in just his career-fourth NCTS start.

Miller, a graduate of the Cunningham Motorsports Dodge Driver Development team owned by Kerry Scherer and Briggs Cunningham, competed in six ARCA RE/MAX Series events in 2006 as part of the Dodge Driver Development Program. Miller and the Cunningham Motorsports team with Crew Chief Wayne Carroll also earned the Pork Pole award at Gateway Int’l Raceway. In all Miller logged two top-five finishes and three top-10s.

With the competition level at an all-time high in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, development teams in the RE/MAX Series continue to be the route to NASCAR’s higher levels of competition.

In 2006, Gibson’s 59 car finished sixth in year-end ARCA RE/MAX Series car owner points. The 59 team is currently accepting driver resumes with sufficient funding to run the entire 2007 season. Inquiries should be directed to Mark Gibson at 770-725-6711 or Dave Goodman 423-943-1566.
