This had legs
8/30/2006 6:38 AM

I had a feeling that I might slightly regret the title ("Case Closed") of my July 25 column on the Niger uranium story. I have now presented thousands of words of evidence and argument to the effect that, yes, the Saddam Hussein regime did send an important Iraqi nuclear diplomat to Niger in early 1999. And I have not so far received any rebuttal from any source on this crucial point of contention. But there was always another layer to the Joseph Wilson fantasy.

But now we have the final word on who did disclose the name and occupation of Valerie Plame, and it turns out to be someone whose opposition to the Bush policy in Iraq has—like Robert Novak's—long been a byword in Washington. It is particularly satisfying that this admission comes from two of the journalists—Michael Isikoff and David Corn—who did the most to get the story wrong in the first place and the most to keep it going long beyond the span of its natural life.

Yeah, the CIA can start functioning again if Valerie returns. She made the best coffee and was the only one who knew how to clear copy machine paper jams. Maybe now our little secret agent can get back to emptying the waste baskets in her office.

So.......it turns out that not only was this whole thing a sham from the get-go.....(WOW! Who knew?)..... but there were those who knew it, yet in true political in-fighting style, let it run its destructive course...

Maybe the Wilsons will get to sit with Jimmy Carter and Michael Moore in the Presidential Box at the next Democratic National Convention. Heck.....if Mother Sheehan can stay healthy long enough......maybe she could join in . That would be a fitting end to their 15 minutes of <ahem> fame. (An extended stay at the Crossbar Hilton would still be my first choice).

Watch for another Vanity Fair cover for our little spybot Val.

I'd always said what's the big deal about outing a secretary, now I have the proof to back up the statement.

Are you ready for this...(drum roll, please)

Powell and Armitage have both shown up on a list of "McCain for President" supporters and advisors.

McCain really scares me.  He honestly thinks he's doing the people's work when all he's accomplishing is keeping himself in power.

+1 to that.  But there's something about him that bothers me more than even a lot of die-hard true libs.

Well, I never bought into the love-fest that surrounded Colin Powell. He's just another two-bit political hack that had a stellar military career.

Generals don't make such good politicians most of the time. That he would allow this to occur when he knew what was going on is a pretty good reason not to ever vote for him should the opportunity arise.

Petty spite over think tank policy disagreement is at the root of this entire mess. Armitage wanted revenge against the neo-cons for ousting Saddam. The best part about all of this information coming out in the book is that the book is co-authored by two very solid leftists.

It's a shame that decent people don't want to volunteer for these jobs anymore but it's an even bigger shame that there's so much two-bitter candidates for the jobs.

"Remind us never to get in a foxhole with either Mr. Comey or the Powell crowd."

Good article, jlb...
