Wichita, Bandits

A very exciting race. The guys could run high and low. Hockett picked up the victory over Dickie Gaines. Both exchanged the lead a couple of times and were clearly the class of the field. Bud Kaeding spun on lap1 and bent the front axel as they replaced it after the races. He came and I believe finished 6th. After seeing Robert Ballou 3 or 4 times he is one of the most fun guys to watch. Hockett was very impressive and if I saw correctly I believe he had a Ford, not sure it could have been Mopar.

Rarely does a weekly modfied show excite me, but the modifieds at 81 were a lot of fun too. The track was as close to perfect as possible in my opinion.

We made the trek up to Wichita last night to run with the Bandits. Having raced at Wichita with the ASCS and NCRA, we figured that it would dry out pretty quick. This is one of the main reasons we went up there knowing we were underpowered. We were running our NCRA steel head 360 motor with guys running 410s with many equipment extras. A few of the guys who regularly run wingless had adjustable shocks, different chassis, and even saw a car that had weight-jackers on the torsion bar stops (that was a first for me).

The track stayed heavy from the time hot laps started through all the qualifying races. On that type of track, you could really see the difference between a 360 and 410. The cars were really hooking up well. The track dried out more for the A. Kerry started on the rear of the field and eventually worked his way up to 14th. While running 14th, Kerry hit a spot in turns 1 & 2 and did a 360. That put him back to 21st or so position. He ran until Lap 25 when a caution was thrown for a car spinning out. He was already lapped and was set to start in front of the leaders. I was impressed with the 10R of David Wheeler. He ran the entire race with the RR shock shoved into the Jacobs ladder.

I do have one complaint about last night.... The scoring was bad. The transponders they had put on the cars earlier in the evening were taken off before the A Feature because they said the loop wasnt working. I know for a fact that Kerry was in front of the 57 car for a few laps before the 57 spun out for the second time and was black flagged (or at least he was pushed off the track). The scorers put the 57 car two spots in front of us. The car that was pitted next to us said that they were scored 3 places lower than what they should have been. It took 45 minutes for them to score and get pay out to the drivers. We could have been a third of the way home in that time, and the teams going on with the tour had to get going to Missouri as well.

All in all... I really enjoyed it. I wish that we could get a wingless series started in the Oklahoma/Kansas/Texas area. After running two wingless shows in the past month, I'm ready to race it some more!

Living in Texas, I rarely ever get the chance to see top 410 wingless teams, and they were very impressive. After seeing the WoO LM's in Missouri im glad we don't have to see those guys in Texas.

If you REALLY want to see a cool regional series, local series, whatever... put ASCS 360 motors in a nonwing car and watch the teams save $$$.  I've always wondered why Emmett Hahn hasn't done it yet in AZ or CA... he obviously runs the TNT series and has run a few ASCS races topless to try it out.  It sounded like a big hit when they were at Creek County in OK a few years back.

If I promoted a 1/4 to 3/8 mile track... I'd definitely have nonwing 360 cars.  I'll bet even around here you'd end up with 20 cars within a year EASY.  The IMCA or ASCS 360 program is fine with me, probably run them as special events.  I'd guess the ASCS is a bit pricey to run weekly without a nice purse... even the regional ASCS doesn't pay much though.

OK... whole reason I was posting... I'm curious about TKFAN's comment about Hockett having a Ford or Mopar... did you "hear" something or visually you thought it was?  I don't know how anyone from the stands could tell a difference in a Mopar vs. a Chevy, even if stickers are all over thats no guaranty.  Ford is pretty different looking, gotta be careful about 1 particular head that WESMAR and a few others built... equispacing between cylinders similar to a Ford but with a little different look around where the headers bolt on vs. a Ford.  The Keith Kunz team still runs one on occasion, TyLer Wklers 35 team ran one when he was doing well on the GUmout tour (a WESMAR product).

So anyway... what led you to believe Hockett ran something different?  I'm not even arguing, it was just an intriguing observation and I love it when racers run something different.  I thought Hockett was running WESMAR motors... who knows what he has in his 410 arsenal at the moment.

If it is the same motor that he had at knoxville, I also thought it looked like a Ford  The reason that I say that is because of the way the header pipes coming off of the block were evenly spaced.  Maybe he is doing some R&D, but my first thought when I seen it was that it was a Ford.

TX out here in the west we see alot of non wing 360's and on the right size track they are fantastic. My local track runs them weekly on our 1/3 miler and they are great. I posted a few weeks back that we had 48 of the cars show for a race recently. They do well out here.

The pipers were evenly spaced leading me to believe that it was either a ford or an old mopar. I believe that the old mopars were like that. Being in a hurry to get back home i totally forgot to look at it in the pits as I was getting my Bud Kaeding shirt, as I had wasted enough time watching Bud's crew changing the front axel.

Brad Sweet wins the Bandit ASCS TNT race at Lakeside in KCK tonight. Hockett came home 3rd.

It was a GREAT show! The track was as good as I've ever seen at Lakeside. Sell out, standing room only crowd!

Sweet was fast all night in the Jack Yeley 3j.Big Smile [:D]
