The Giro - The First of the Big Three Has Begun
5/15/2009 8:52 AM
The Giro began Saturday, and it's already into the mountains. Lance is not yet fit and has beeen struggleing. Considering he had a broken collarbone a few weeks ago, I'm not surprised. At least he should be able to race himself into shape for the Tour.
The good news is that his teammates, Chris Horner Levi Leipheimer and Popovich are riding well.
The riders were none too pleased wiht yesterday's finish.

Levi Leipheimer: "We had a fast downhill in the middle of the stage and we were comparing top speeds, heard JJ Haedo hit 117kph!! That's 72.7mph to be exact. Wow, the last 30km today was crazy! The peloton was not happy."
Lance
: "The last 30 kilometres were the craziest I've seen in my life. A long stretch, a quick descent - at 80km/h - and then a tight circuit. It's a cycling course, not a Moto GP. At one stage we even reached 110 (kilometres) an hour. It's crazy!"

72mph on about 1sq inch of rubber with 100 of you closest friends around you down a snaking mountain road with no idea what's around the next corner. Safety gear? Think about sliding down the road in your underwear wiht not much more than an Igloo cooler on your head - it's bloody. I thought one guy was going down for sure. He was still on the breaks when he entered a corner and the back wheel locked up.
Today's stage ends with a 1500meter drop over 23km. It should be another wild finish as the climb is not difficult enough to separate the group.

On Saturday Pedro Horrillo crashed on s descent and fell 60-80meters down a ravine. He had to be airlifted to a hospital. Thankfully he is now concious and able to move his limbs.
