Ben Spies Taking WSBK By Storm
4/5/2009 1:06 AM
Anyone following Ben Spies' maiden season of the World Super Bikes? I don't want to call it a domination, but the guy is three for three in poles and he's won three of the four races (they run two races per weekend) with a new bike on unfamiliar tracks.
I don't get a chance to see many American Super Bike races, but started trying to catch the races after he really impressed me with his three Moto GP starts last year for Suzuki. His three race debut with Suzuki (14-Donnington, 8-Leguna Seca and 6-Indy) culminated at Indy where he out-performed both Rizla factory riders - including Chris Vermulin a GP winner and specialist in the wet.
I'd love to see him on a Tech3 GP bike next year. Apparently, I'm not the only one.
He's in action again this weekend at Velencia where he again won the pole. This was a bit more special as he had to fit an extra contingent of Spanish riders on their home track and had to change to his back-up bike due to a mechanical with just under two minutes remaining. And oh yeah...it was a lap record!
