Those "old school" racers really were the bravest of the brave. Especially the open wheel guys. I love watching the old films of Indy and The Midgets on dirt. Even the europeans were bad ass.

yeah...those things they drove were death traps.  I've seen a stat that one in ten died racing in those years.

Lloyd is credited with the spring loaded fuel hose used today, because of an accident he had in the pits in the Indy 500. He had the race all but won and drove off after a fuel stop with the hose still stuck in the car......drug the fuel tank off the car.....set the pit box on fire.....and undoubtable cost him the race.

My parents used to watch him race midgets on dirt here in WF in the mid to late fiftees. Back to the danger issue......the race track doubled as a horse race track and had wooden guardrails all the way around.

Was that back in the Turbine Powered car days? I was just a kid then.

I remember watching Salt Walther knock down the fence on Wide World of Sports right as they waved the green flag. That was my first Indy 500.

My Dad got me interested in MotorSports before I knew about other sports.

Here's a link to an outstanding phot site with some pretty cool Loyd Ruby shots.

I especially like the one of him on the dirt mile in his rear engined car.

excellent photo link! thanks for posting!

I built a pine wood derby car based on the #12 Cablevision car! I bet Ive still got it buried in my junk somewhere!!

Our local dirt track held an old timers race around 1984 or 85 and invited Llyod. Most of the drivers were retired racers from the local area........he absolutely kicked there tails!

I was also lucky enough to see him race at TMS a couple of years ago in an old timers race on the 1/4 mile. Those old men got out there and mixed it up!

Lloyd Ruby was one of the best and a total class act......I was a young lad of 15 lisening to the 500 the year he had his pit mishap......my heart broke . I understand at the track you could cut the disapointment with a knife . I met with him many times at Trenton speedway and he was always a total class act , always time for the fans and polite and friendly to a young guy who snuck in the pits . Drivers like Lloyd Ruby , Mario Andretti , Oscar Kovaleski and Dan Gurney were the benchmark for their sport....both on track and off .
