Steve Kinser Returns to Syracuse For Special World of Outlaws 'King of the Mile' Exhibition

WEEDSPORT, N.Y. — September 28, 2009 — It's one of the most historic racing venues in the country. For one week — one Super DIRT Week — it welcomes more than 120,000 fans, more than 1,000 campers, and nearly 500 competitors. It's the New York State Fairgrounds, and this year count four World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series superstars among the list of competitors in a special four-lap exhibition that returns winged Sprint Cars to Syracuse for the first time since 1995.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series has a storied history at Syracuse, with some of the biggest names in racing earning victories at the Mile, including Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, Doug Wolfgang, Dave Blaney and Billy Pauch. Kinser was the last World of Outlaws winner at the Moody Mile. He'll return on Friday, Oct. 9, and take on three of his World of Outlaws competitors, including championship contender Jason Meyers, to decide the King of the Mile.

“I always enjoyed running the miles and I had a lot of success at Syracuse,” said Kinser, a 20-time World of Outlaws champion and a five-time winner at Syracuse. “I have a lot of great memories of that Mile. The best race was when me and Jac Haudenschild went back and forth several times through traffic at crazy speeds, that was a lot of fun. This event should be great for the fans.”

The event will be a sneak preview of the World of Outlaws New Yorker 25 on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge, N.Y. With only nine points separating three-time champion Donny Schatz and Meyers, and only another 29 points to Joey Saldana, every race is critical to the overall championship as the season winds down to the World Finals Nov. 5-7 at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway.

“The King of the Mile will be a great opportunity for the Super DIRT Week fans at the New York State Fairgrounds to get up close to the World of Outlaws drivers and cars during the day on Friday, pick up a couple autographs and see these cars four wide on the Moody Mile,” said World Racing Group CEO Brian Carter. “Steve Kinser is the sport's icon and has been one of the most successful drivers at Syracuse, so having him return to show a new generation of fans what Sprint Cars can do on the Mile will be one of the most exciting history lessons they'll ever see.”

Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else find it odd that the same guy that was heavily involved with two groups that broke away from the WoO in the past 25 years(USA and NST) is now shilling for the same organization that he tried to kill off?

Well, I suppose the almighty dollar has something to do with this.......but then, a wise man once said, "...everyone has his price...."

Maybe so, maybe not Sprinter. But I for one would like to be there for that run. I have the DVDs of the Outlaws racing at Syracuse during the 80's and 90's and they were unbelievable racing and unbelievable speeds.

They get to spread out on most 1/2 mile tracks.  A mile?  Not for me.

I think it has been about 10 years ago but you should have seen Peter Murphy fly around the mile at CAL EXPO in Sacramento.
Couldn't believe it.  When he came in from hot laps he crawled out and said, "Mate, I really like going fast!"
He had quick time that evening and won the race.  Some guy from Goodyear was there with a "gun" and at one point had him at 172 coming down the front stretch!  That is scary!

As to Kinser.....well, I view him like I do Richard Petty.  Until I can surpass what they have done I won't criticize them!

Don't know how true it is , but at the end of my DVDs from the last race, 1995 I believe, the Outlaws said the speeds had gotten too fast and too dangerous to race there anymore. From watching them hit 185 miles an hour with those sprinters and seeing some of the crashes, I don't blame them.

Kill off????  You goddabe kidding.  The races, racers and fans are all better off as a result of the NST efforts.  Sounds to me like contempt prior to investigation.

Are you implying that by joining the NST he wasn't trying to ruin the WoO? C'mon, what color is the sky on your world?

Ever talked with anyone involved in the split (those involved with the NST)? You might learn a few things.

There are so many "ifs" involved in this one.
I have talked with a few who were on the "inside" and they feel if Fred had not been taken the NST would be the hot thing today.
Regardless, I think some very good things came as a result of the split.
I have no idea how DRG is keeping their act together but as long as the guys get their check deposted every week I don't think you will hear too many complanits...unless they start pricing themselves out in this economy!

As to the mile, I think it was mentioned about the safety factor.  These machines, in my opinion, are too dangerous on a mile track.  I have seen them and it made me nervous!

I agree.  Good things DID come from the split. And if Fred was still here the newly formed group would be leading the way.

I was there every year from 1973, the second year through 1981 when I left for college. I'm not sure, but I don't think my father has ever missed a year.
Of the group we traveled with I was the sprint car fan. The first couple of years there were the USAC sprints. I was pretty young then so my memory is not 100%. I do remember names like Sheldon Kinser and Tom Bigalow though.
in '78 when the Outlaws were running, Bently Warren brought his Super over from Oswego. He put some grooved tires on the thing, and then checked out in the race. Syracuse is pretty flat and that big offset motor really let him drive through the corners. I forgot that was the year that offered a bonus to the driver who had the best combined finishes at Syracuse on Saturday afternoon and Saturday night at Oswego.
I've posted a couple of photo links before here.

Does anyone remember the year Sammy showed up with the skirts around the car and they made him take them off?

Crazy/dangerous speeds (apparently the reason they stopped racing there 15 yrs ago)  and the oldest guy on the tour?? Makes me wonder why: no Schatz, Meyers, Saldana etc? Why not a full SHOW? Well...its TOO DANGEROUS....just not for the oldest guy on the tour?? If this is such a great thing, the top dogs would be lickin their chops to be involved...they aint.  I dunno bout this.

Seems pretty obvious to me. It's by INVITATION!!!!! They invited 2 of the most popular WoO drivers and 2 Posse guys. Not exactly rocket science.

I'm from the heart of DIRT racing up here in NY, and The Mile will only run Big Blocks now because of the Speeds are much slower than the sprints.

They really call the Mile "The Track Outlawed by the Outlaws" because the speeds were too fast.

My father has been to Super Dirt Week everyear since 1978 and saw ever single one of the Outlaws races, and he says Yes it was the best racing of the weekend to see them go that fast and that wild, but it was too fast and uncharacteristic for a "sprint" car to run Nascar like racing.

I own both DVD's and the racing was good, but as you hear mush throughout the DVD the drivers call it the 100 yard Race as the Driver who made it into the first turn first usually won the race.
But The two 17 lap segments kinda made the 2nd segment cool to watch as some guys hit the mark and made some charges through the field.

As for spreading out, on a Mile Sammy Swindell was catching the rear of the field one year by lap 3... Unreal.

I was going up to watch the King of the Mile but it was raining bad all day, but I did get to run into all the haulers at the Holiday Inn that friday night. Then I went to Rolling Wheels Saturday night, saw a great show. It was great to see the WoO back part of Super Dirt Week one of the largest Dirt events in the World.

Good post and welcome. Post on N.Y. racing and the Super Mods. We all enjoy just about any dirt racing. Billy the Kid grew up watching the mods and posts on them once in awhile.
I have the two DVDs also and the sprint cars were awfully fast. Keep posting.
