What I Did On Summer Vacation...
7/1/2009 11:35 AM
Okay, if you didn't know already, I am a card carrying Sprint Car Geek.  It is well documented going back to the old days of Norman Martin's "WoO Message Board" at Action T-Shirts.

That may help explain the GladBrad Posse mini-vacation to Memphis to soak in some culture, catch a baseball game and check out the latest retail offerings at a fancy indoor plaza.  After dumping the crew at the indoor shopping arena, I made a quick text message to confirm a sixth sense that I was smack dab in the middle of Swindell Country.  Sitting there a stones throw from the Bartlett Industrial Park which contains the hallowed grounds of Swindell Motorsports and R.E. Technologies.

So, I had to go man!  I mean, this is a Sprinter Geek's coup-de-grais!

I was met at the door of R.E. by my tour guide/hostess and was offered the "Grand Tour".  Such a wonderful offer afforded to me!  The front offices of R.E. is nothing short of a photographic musuem of Mid-South Thunder and Lightening.  Sprint Cars, B-Cars (I never have to explain a "B-Car" to older sprinter geeks), straight-liners and such.  Photos of sprint car history that I had never seen before - one shot of Bobby Ward, Sammy Swindell, Rick Ferkel and others took me by surprise (I thought I had seen everything).  Pictures of sprint cars with chrome, pinstripes, knock-off hubs, exquisite details and ACTUAL SPRINT CAR TAIL TANKS were abundant eye candy for all sprinter geeks to consume.  What a deal.  Then, on to the retail/shop area that included a few USAC tasty treats and full-up winged sprinter on display.

I recall BUFORD saying he'd pay greenbacks to watch a sprint car sit still - what more should I say?

I was whisked away from R.E. and taken by car to another industrial building of typical construction - SWINDELL MOTORSPORTS!  And what is in store my eyes?  None other than an inventory including:
1997 WoO Champion sprinter
2009 Chili Bowl Champion midget ("Box Car Sammy")
1998 WoO sprinter
2000 WoO sprinter that blistered the shipped-in clay at Bristol's Thunder Valley
2004/2005 (can't recall) Chili Bowl midget that ran the Saturday alphabet only to fall short in the "A" with driveline problems while running 2nd
Kevin's first go-cart
Kevin's wing panel that is the mate to the panel hanging in my garage
Kevin's pavement midget (#25 - Venture Racing)
2009 Rolfe winged sprinter
2009 Rolfe non-wing sprinter
Two brand-new Rolfe tailtanks
Sets of gold-plated Channelock pliers
Framed photos I had never seen before
Oddly, a Channelock front wing that is slightly damaged with GREEN paint (hmmm.....)
Trophies
Helmets
Parts
Swindell Motorsports Rolodex
A baggie full of Bristol dirt
Stuff
A tour of the controversial living quarters (Bartlett Code Enforcement Beware!)

It was cool, man.  I mean, really cool.  My guided tour was made complete with narration from my Lovely and Talented Tour Guide that included insider info, special stories, etc.

A special afternoon indeed for a Sprint Car Geek like me!
