Bobby Allison won the first restrictor plate race, the 1988 Daytona 500, beating his son Davey, who finished second.

Ironically, it was Davey who won the last non-restricted race at the big tracks, the previous year in May. The last two plate races of 1987 were run with a 390 cfm carburetor, mandated for the cars after Bobby Allison almost went into the grandstands at Talladega the previous May.

All time restrictor plate winners:

1) Jeff Gordon - 12 wins
2) Dale Earnhardt - 11 wins
3) Dale Earnhardt, Jr. - 7 wins
4) Dale Jarrett - 6 wins
5) Sterling Marlin - 5 wins
6) Davey Allison, Ernie Irvan & Michael Waltrip - tied at 4

Other winners on plate tracks include Jimmy Spencer, Darrell Waltrip, Harry Gant, Phil Parsons, Greg Biffle, Ken Schrader, Jamie McMerry, Kyle Busch, Terry Labonte, Bobby Labonte, Brian Vickers, Bobby Allison, Derrike Cope, Ward Burton, Ryan Newman, Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick.

But since there are some people at this site that say restrictor plate racing is not real racing, Jeff Gordon only really has 69 career wins, Dale, Sr. has 65 and Jr. only has 11.

Yeah, that's right. Forgot about that. I also neglected to mention NASCAR's half-a$$ed attempt to solve the rash of basilur skull fracture deaths at NHIS, by mandating plates on the September 2000 race at that track.

Jeff Burton won that race from the pole. He also led every single lap. It was a very boring race, even by New Hampshire's standards.

CMA, who won those 70's restricted races? racing-reference lists some drivers from that era, but show no wins. They also only seem to account from the modern era of plate racing - 1988 to the present.

And tomorrow isn't Christmas. Even if we want it to be.

Think that one over.

on edit: EPSG does not think anything NASCAR is real racing. Soooo, technically, no active driver really has won anything.

Think that one over.

It's close, but the circus that NASCAR has become can't really be called racing; a competition of speed, okay, but racing no.

An almost complete lack of access to the cars and drivers (unless you have too much money that is), coupled with all of the other BS that you and most everyone else complains about remove it from "real" racing.

F1/Indy cars same-same. Money buys you a ride.

Same cars, same engines, all dictated by the powers that be. No amount of ingenuity is allowed, no individuality. You toe the corporate line or you are beat down.

Now, having said that, "back-in-the-day" was racing. From it's inception until say 1975-1980'ish it was racing, but from there on it became less and less "real" racing until we have what you see today.

Think THAT one over.

jlb Jeff Gordon is not going to be very happy with you. Just as Jr nation has started to turn some of their hate for Gordon over to Kyle Busch you have to bring stats up that show how Jeff passed Sr in some categories. Now you'll have some Gordon haters all worked up again. And will be throwing bottles and cans at him the next time he wins. Even if he honors him with respect and does a parade lap carrying the #3 banner waving.

that's an interesting post there pf.

From what I've gathered via news stories and callers to Sirius, there were just as many Gordog fans that were PO'd when he did that fantastically classy tribute to Big E last year.

The only problem I had with that tribute was that he did not tie The Intimidator at Bristol last year, because then I would have been there and I would have been able to tell everyone that I was at the race when he tied the win total and I raised my beer in salute to a great accomplishment.

I also knew that he stood a good chance of passing the win total the following week at Talladega and I was really hoping that he wouldn't do it there because it was easy to see the ugliness that was going to happen. What was really interesting about that race was not so much what occurred on the track, but the immediate aftermath when all of the h88turs came in and started blaming Jr. nation. For sure some of those peeps didn't want any success for Gordon, but one picture that really told the tale of the tape was the fan in handcuffs wearing the Jimmy Johnson ball cap.

I subscribe to the concept that anyone can say they are a Jr. fan when it suits their purpose of starting a good bash of Jr. or his fans on the way down the road of hate and discontent.

I like to refer to those times as drive by Joonyers.

However, I digress....

Idiocy and hate knoweth no distinction between paint schemes (or last names).

I just love how some people presume to tell us what "real racing" is.  And then if we don't subscribe to their narrow definition of what the sport "should" be, somehow we're not real race fans and are lesser people for it.

This makes them come across like snobs and elitists.

Well, I've got news for these people.

The next time they go take a dump, they need to turn around and take a good sniff of what's sitting there in the toilet, and realize that their sh!t stinks just as much as anyone else's out there.

So are you saying that when those peeps take a Joonyer or a Dupont or a Tubby or a Lowe's that they really need to understand that their's stink, too?
