The problem needs to be stopped before any solution will work.

The problem is multilevel greed combined with ignorance.

1st level greed:
Self indulgent Consumers who buy houses, cars, nintendo games, vacations ect on credit they really cannot afford, because they see the opportunity to get live a lifestyle beyond their means and someone will let them have it.  Does anyone remember when getting a credit card was a status symbol showing proof of genuine financial ability and everyone else had to pay cash?  How about all the peole that have cellphones, but somehow can't buy gasoline to get to work?  American consumers owed a grand total of $1.9773 trillion in October 2003, according to the latest statistics on consumer credit from the Federal Reserve.  This same Federal reserve study found that 43% of Americans spend more than they make each year.......43%!!! Holy Cow!

Blame banks all you want, but who borrowed the money and who welched on their debts at the start of the chain?

1st level ignorance:
consumers that do not realize what credit is really costing them and allow themselves to be entices by the slick advertising by people telling them to get the credit they deserve and never realising that credit is ultimately the same and being and indentured servant to the bank that leant them the money often at rates high enough that they'll never get out.

2nd level greed:
Banks, lenders and investors that lure people in debts that are beyond their reasonable ability to pay.  Not caring what it does to the borrow nore what these potentilly bad loans do to their bottomline.  They just know they are making a killing right now in terms of points and closing fees.

2nd level ignorance:
Business that thinks leveraging is the best way to grow and cannot see seriously bad risks in lending that would ultimately put them out of  business or at minimum into bankruptcy.  In addition is business run by socialists that simply do not understand supply and demand and did not rein in lending to developers when it was obvious that the US was getting into a housing glut because they had to be compassionate lenders so American's could realize their dream of owing their souls to a faceless entity.

Exactly!  However, don't forget to throw in the raping of companies by the CEO's (see FRANKLIN RAINE's picture with KEN LAY's on definition of CEO ***) along with all the outsourcing of jobs, the TWENTY MILLION illegals in the system depressing american wages, and you have a complete recipe for the disaster we're undergoing...

I remember when department stores had " Lay-Away " programs. If you couldn't afford something, they would hold it for you, let you pay a little here and a little there till you had it paid for.  Then they gave it to you.

But not in today's society.  It's  gimmeee  gimmee gimmee.  I have to have it now.
