Nice article, but his quote about Schatz winning consecutive championships since the NST, "we got a little behind (because of) during the National Sprint Tour".  What, their racing program suffered because the National Sprint Tour caused them to lose ground?  Maybe the quote wasn't accurate or the writer screwed up, but sounded strange.

Pretty easy to figure Steve out since he is pushing 55.  With the death of  Fast Freddie Brownfield the NST never had a chance.  If he were alive today it would be a different story IMO.

Or maybe he didn't have to race as hard with the NST.....

One would think that folks who are SOOO worried about Steve's well-being and their self-proclaimed lack of good showings on his part would at least know how old Steve is.

He was born June 2nd, 1954.

I didn't figure he was ready to hang up the racing gloves yet, and I don't blame him a bit. Making good money, still VERY competitive, and doing something he enjoys. We should all be so lucky.

The marketing people at Geritol and ExtenZe are missing a golden opportunity.
They could make a killing next year by promoting their products with THE KING!
Yeah, I know....ExtenZe would have to give that "four-hour warning" but Steve could live with that!

I'd bet it's more than that, but nothing to base it on other than the lines at his trailer during and his hauler after the races.

Absolutely EPSG!!  I am a big Steve Kinser fan and have been since the mid 70's.  Even with his age factor, he is still a threat to win every race he enters.  True, there are a lot of young guns out there, doing well, but Steve is still very competive.  I will always be a S.K. fan as I'm still a big fan of Doug Wolfgang, who no longer races, and still a big Jan Opperman fan though he is no longer with us.  Jan was one of the nicest people I had the pleasure of meeting.  In the pits, he always had time to chat with you.  Really dating myself, huh?

I know how you feel. I became an Opp fan the afternoon that he towed into Midwest Speedway with that little open trailer and lapped up to third or fourth place. Hurried to the pits to hear him say "We'd have been better but we lost a cylinder in the heat race"!!!!

The NST was NEVER gonna go anywhere. It was going to sink just like the USA(or whatever it was called) Series they formed to try and over-throw the WoO's years ago.

Also, this article was published 8 1/2 months ago, not exactly ground breaking news.

Well, some of us are a little slow so I hope you will overlook that, Butcher.

By the way, did you get the NST info on your own or did you call MISS CLEO?

I will support Steve no matter how long he chooses to race. Heck I'm older then he is. And if he wants to race when he needs help to get in and out of the car I would be honored to help him in & out. If I live that long & can.

I wouldn't be so sure about that Butcher. I like to think that had things worked out a little differently it could have succeeded.

Actually, it DID succeed in several areas that were the orginal bones of contention for the drivers.

As for Social Security; since I'm a lot of years away from it I'll have to let the ones who are livinv on the dole to answer as to whether or not it works.

What area was the 'original bones of contention', just curious? Looking at the 2006 schedule it just looks like a bunch of tracks the WoO's didn't want to run at.?.?

Quaker state is going away! Or are they going to be coming back?  Is steve going to be sponsoring himself?  Let us remember tim kaeding three years ago. Steve parked the car after about a dozen races. Maybe there is announcement around the corner that will surprise most of us!

This article was written BEFORE the season started...his WORST season ever! Take a close look at THIS QUOTE (from the article) and ask yourself if his view of the situation may have taken a turn, based on his performance this year and the CURRENT state of his health: "Physically, I'm not what I was, but I think I can still win a lot of races and win championships. If I didn't think I could, I wouldn't be out here now."

Father time has spoken...hopefully Steves not getting too deaf.

"Making good money"...check...I guess. If selling TSHIRTS is what you aspire to...great...go for it.

"..still VERY competitive..."....ummm...not exactly.  19...12...DNQ. Steves finishing position (or lack thereof) at the 3 most prestigious events in the sport this year. Kings Royal, Nats and Gold Cup. Since Sept.1st the guy has finished in the top five 3 times. Its late October. His last win...MID JULY! When your name is STEVE KINSER...this DOES NOT amount to "very competitive".

"...doing something he enjoys."  Absolutley NOT! Anyone who has watched this guy over the years knows how much he HATES to lose. I cant see him doing this alot longer...not at his current rate of 'success'.

I wonder what color the sky is in your world.

It;s a lot bluer than that peice of crap you are trying to put out. Steve;s contract with Quaker State is good thru 2011, that's  why he said he;ll be racing thru 2011. That info came from his and his wife;s mouth to me several times. Now you can put out all the crap you want but at the end of it all you;ll still be eating it, so go ahead a spew. Eagle SS works pretty good, just wish my health had allowed me to wait till full bene's kick in, would have made 600 more a month in my case.  NST was the best!

Folks, please drop the NST arguement and where we would be today if it survived.  I can not recall which mag it was in (Sprint&Midget or Flatout) but right before Mr. Brownfield's untimely death Steve Kinser did an interview that said Brownfield was looking to sell controlling interest of the NST because he did not want to be out on the road handleing all the aspects of running the series. I even think the article made it appear the deal was close to being finalized which of course changed when he died.

I believe the only things that actually have continued since the NST's demise are the kids pill draw for the dash(which most of the drivers hate) and the t-shirt trailer row at the front gate area of most speedways.  And remember the racing was the same, the cars still cost a ton and if the NST existed instead of the WoO we would be bitching about the same things.

As long as that green 11 is around, We will all still be smiling. So lets never "Farve" him or give up. Hes probably going to go from best sprint car driver to best owner to stay right on top.

Lets see the new article or interview with him about his future. As that one was pre-This season.

Obviously some people are so riddled with guilt at their own age, lack of success in life and other shortcomings that they just can't believe that anyone who's SEVERAL years younger than they are can still have what they never will and be enjoying life to it's fullest.

One last time for the hearing/reading impaired folks, and this will be the last time because as they old saying goes "Arguing with some people is like trying to teach calculus to a pig. It gets you nowhere and just irritates the pig".

Fourth in points with the most prestigious traveling 410 Sprint Car group in the world. Made nearly $170,000 in winnings thus far in that series and who knows how much more in souvenier sales, etc. Adored and revered the world around, especially by his fellow racers. Great wife and children. Sounds like a life that is not only successful no matter how you define the term but surely as far from an existence to be pitied as there could possibly be.

Yes, I can see how some people would be so jealous of him that it eats at their every waking moment. Sad, but true. I would be fascinated to know how these folks know exactly how Steve feels about his life. Isn't there some phrase about being a  in someone's pocket?? More like just a .

I do agree with the sentiment that the NST is old news. Mr. Brownfield died or who knows what may have happened, but it is in the past and needs to be let alone.
