The Most Recalled Cars

http://biz.yahoo.com/weekend/mostrecall_1.html

"So much for Toyota's vaunted reputation for quality. On July 18, the Japanese auto giant announced a recall of 418,570 vehicles worldwide for faulty engine parts. This follows an even larger global recall of nearly one million cars and trucks at the end of May for faulty parts that could cause drivers to lose control of the steering wheel.

The current recall affects about 150,000 cars sold outside of Japan, mainly in the U.S. and Canada, though no accidents have been reported due to the faulty engine component that could lead to oil leakage. In the U.S. more than 34,000 cars were recalled, including 26,200 Echo and 8,500 Prius models. While Toyota is no stranger to recalls—in May 2005 it recalled more than 750,000 pickup trucks and every single 2006 Toyota model line from the Avalon to the Tundra has experienced some form of recall—this latest round may finally dent its Teflon image if steps aren't taken to improve quality.

I'm a ford man. I like the rush of driving a car that could explode into a giant ball of flame at any time!

Since  I got no reply from this last post I thought I'd follow you here Tex.

I was reading an article in automotive engineering that was an interview with GM CEO Rick Wagoner who said, that GM shot itself in the rear end by designing its components to last the life of the warranty while Toyota was designing components to last the expected life of the vehicle.  The result being that after the warranties ran out many GM customers had problems with their vehicles.  The assumption that GM had made was that GM customers were loyal and when this planned obsolesence occured the customer would return and buy a new GM vehicle.  Instead customers got pissed off because their car wore out too quickly and went and bought cars (not necessarily Toyotas) that had reputations for reliablility.  He says that GM has targeted this problem, but that the damage done will take GM 15 or more years to overcome.

Recalls and reliability are two different things and when you look at the top of the list of cars with fewest problems per 100 vehciles produced GM's models do not top the list.  They occasionally get one in there, but they have not been there consistently like Toyota has.  This is how Toyota has managed to gain the image of reliability over all of its models.   According to the article below none of GM's brands even made the top 10 in vehicle reliabilty while all 3 of Toyotas (Lexus, Toyota, Scion) made the list and with the exception of Mercury the rest were asian brands as well.  However you can relax because the europeans make even worse vehicles than we Americans.

Another truth is that more recalls are in the future for all automakers because of the fickle consumer.  Car Companies are forced to rush designs to market before the consumer changes his taste thereby engineering mistakes will be more frequent.  It is only logical.

Toyota has traditionally overengineered it's vehicles, so it had an edge in reliability. It did not hurt consumers buying new vehicles from them.

I'm missing your point. So what you are saying (and the article is saying) is that Toyota recalls cars when they don't meet THEIR standards rather than chevy fighting it out in court when THEIR cars kill people due to crappy constuction..............

Nice spin job you racist POS. Got a problem with them little yeller fellers? I seem to have missed your Nazi Dodge German Bias......... just dam, ya'll have been allowed to get really lax with my absence. Bubba is back, tighten up on your logic skills.......... if you even have any.........

Hell since you are posting bogus crap why don't you post the bogus crap about Chevy Trucks exploding due to side impact? I can see now why you are a die hard republican apologist. What did you do? Make up you mind on EVERYTHING about thirty years ago and then slap 40 coats of varnish on it so it couldn't be changed? Are you a Baptist?
