Great stuff Oregon Race Fan; am I wrong in thinking the best days of drag racing were in the last 2-3 years before the Xmas tree. And it did not have to be NHRA; back then you could go to an AHRA event and sometimes even see a better show.
I noted that someone on here lives near to where the old Green Valley Racetrack at Grapevine near Ft. Worth used to be and do I ever have memories of the Labor Day weekend AHRA nationals and I was there three years in a row.
I think in '62 I saw a lanky kid from CA. with the first name of Don run against the Vance Hunt car for TF eliminator and both cars fouled; the Hunt car red lit and Prudhomme ran in the grass; so they ran it over and I don't have a clue who won.
And then the saddest of days in '63 or '64 when Hunt's driver went out the other end and as I recall never pulled the chute or hit the brakes, instant death.
And then one year Art Malone was there and during a rain delay I noted the front of his car up, him under the engine drilling with a huge hand drill. I watched for a while and finally had to ask what he's doing; he replied he was trying to balance the crasnk. Must have did it right 'cause he won top fuel.
