Edwards should sit tomorrow and watch the race fro
8/19/2006 6:50 PM
As much as I like seeing raw emotion displayed by drivers, he is no different than a truck series driver named Kevin Harvick that sat out a Cup race in 2002 for nothing more than revenge on the track. This isn't Edwards first rodeo with spinning/hitting cars on the track for intentional purposes and then gets out and smiles interviewing...I guess when a guy can buy an airplane in his sophmore season of racing, he feels he can do anything he wants with no consequence. Come on Nascar, show your muscle and sit him out a Cup race, sure it has nothing to do with the Cup Series, but that didn't stop you at Martinsville in 2002, did it??

It was my understanding he is.

NASCAR did the right thing with Harvick. They won't do it here, though. In fact, I'd kind of have to call it the wrong thing if they did. They backed off of that precedent, obviously bowing to pressure from sponsors. That's why they didn't sit Tony when he violated his probation a few years back. That's why they haven't suspended several drivers who have deserved it. They did suspend Spencer, but they had no significant sponsorship ramifications.

Suspending Edwards now would look like a politically motivated swipe at Roush, one of NASCAR's favorite targets (see: 4 car rule).

ETA: One thing about Harvick I always thought was wrong was how he was suspended in one series for what happened in another. I don't think that's right and never have. If Edwards is punished, he should be suspended in Busch competition, not Cup competition.

Yea Carl is a full time busch driver and being this happend in a busch race it would make sense to sit him out a busch race if anything.

Now I like ol Edwards...........But NASCAR isn't fair on much of its rulings. Heck just last week they penelize Said and NOT Newman (Iknow.....thats cup and not Busch). Newman's people cried for 2 hours to the officials, as did Saids people and look who lost in the end......

I just did a quick search and could not find anything. Should be interesting to see what they say on that one.

If Carl *isn't* on probation, I imagine he will be.

Come on now, the sponsor still has a car in the race, just not the driver. That is why it is a punishment, designed to deter the offender from pursuing the action. What good are rules if they aren't enforced. Why would you condone what they did to Harvick (a one time offense) and not think the Edwards situation should result in the same result? He is a multi-offender of this type of wrecklessness and something needs to be done. The notion of "targeting" Roush is absurd as well. Roush didn't tell Edwards to act like an idiot and tear up two racecars under yellow and I don't think anyone in the free world would accuse Nascar of "targeting" Roush by sitting a deserving driver down to think about it.
